Organic is a regulated production and labeling claim, not a general synonym for natural, chemical-free or premium. For cashew importers, private-label brands and distributors, the commercial question is simple: can the supplier provide valid evidence covering the exact product, processing site, packing site and transaction?
1. Verify the certificate and its scope
Ask for the current organic certificate and scope certificate issued to the legal operator responsible for the goods. Check the operator name, facility address, product category, permitted activities, standard, certifier, issue date and expiry date. A certificate held by a farm, trader or unrelated facility does not automatically cover kernels processed or packed elsewhere.
2. Match the claim to the contracted lot
The sales contract should identify the grade, crop or production period, quantity, packing, lot references and the exact organic standard required by the destination market. The supplier should also explain how certified material is segregated from conventional material through receiving, storage, processing and dispatch.
3. Review traceability and transaction documents
Request a traceability path from incoming material to finished cartons. Depending on the market and certification program, the buyer may also need transaction certificates, import certificates or other shipment-specific records. These documents should be agreed before deposit, not after loading.
4. Keep food-safety checks separate
Organic certification does not replace food-safety or quality control. Buyers should still define moisture, defects, foreign matter, microbiological criteria, chemical-residue testing where required, shelf life, packaging integrity and inspection procedures. A retained sample and approved specification reduce disputes.
5. Confirm packaging and labeling approval
Organic logos and wording are controlled in many markets. Private-label artwork should be reviewed against the destination requirements before printing. The certifier or importer may need to approve the label, and the company name printed on the pack must align with the certified supply chain.
