Responsible procurement begins with precise questions. Instead of accepting a broad “green” description, cashew buyers should ask for the boundaries, records and controls behind each statement.
Energy
What energy sources are used at the processing and packing site? Is consumption metered by facility or production line? If renewable energy is claimed, what period and percentage are covered, and can the source be verified?
Water
Which process steps use water, how is consumption monitored and how is wastewater handled? A recycling system should be assessed through operating records and water-quality controls, not a general description.
Cashew by-products
Shells, testa and other by-products can have commercial uses, but buyers should ask who receives them, how volumes are recorded and whether handling complies with local requirements. By-product use should not automatically be converted into an emissions claim.
Packaging
Confirm the material structure, food-contact suitability, net weight, barrier performance and recovery or recyclability conditions in the destination market. “Recyclable” depends on the actual pack and available collection system.
Traceability and corrective action
Ask how incoming material, production batches, finished cartons and container records are linked. Review how deviations are recorded, investigated and closed. These operating controls often provide more decision value than slogans.
